Fruiting vines
We are currently increasing the stocks of vines in our trials and
have been researching from two local vineyards which vines are the
best for outdoor cultivation. We will continue to add to this list
so please ask.
Black Hamberg The
best black grape for the cold greenhouse, can be grown in a
medium-sized pot outdoors all summer. Outstanding quality fruit
ripen in late October. I make 30 bottles of wine per year from
our vine. Thinned and shaped, the bunches look stunning on the
dining table |

Vitis vinifera purpura
Visitors to the nursery are invariably attracted
to this vine. Throughout the summer, deep beetroot coloured
leaves provide a spot of colour on a wall, fence or pergola.
In autumn it turns the most vivid red. The golden coloured grapes
are very palatable |

Abutilon
Patrick Synge
The orange red bell-shaped flowers hang from
the deep green leaves all through the year except in the harshest
weather. The abutilon planted on our house fifteen years ago
has proven completely hardy; it stays evergreen and grows to
3.5m. It is regularly pruned to 1m in November and is rarely
out of flower |

Akebia quinata
(The Chocolate Vine) The twining vines quickly cover
trellis, pergolas, uninteresting shrubs and outbuildings, with
five lobed leaves as the name quinata implies. Chocolate-coloured
flowers in bunches appear from March to May which have a chocolate
scent. Sometimes sausage-shaped fruits are seen hanging in September.
Handsome easy-to-grow evergreen from the forest margins of Korea
and Formosa reaching 6m |
