Evergreen clematis
We grow around 14 species and their cultivars. The two best known
being C.armandii, with the handsome glossy
green laurel type leaves and heavily scented flowers between February
and May, and the various C.cirrhosa that
sometimes lose their leaves in the summer. All of them can be quite
vigorous and will need sufficient space or a regular pruning to
keep them restricted to one fence panel. We know of C.cirrhosas
grown entirely out of the sun, which flower all year round presumably
because they think it is winter. Many gardeners are now planting
C.viticella cultivars with these evergreens
to provide a further four months of flower in the summer in the
same area of ground.
Gardener’s tip: New
Zealand evergreens
Do not prune these in winter as they are by then
carrying the spring flowers. Prune them to around 60cm
on 1 June and they will then grow an increased number of new shoots
for the following year’s flowers. If you do not prune them
they will eventually have bare legs.
