A big thank you to all our customers for supporting
Priorswood Clematis over the past twenty-seven years.
Priorswood Clematis is a family business with two generations of
the Greenway family involved on a full-time basis. Many of you have
become our friends through your long association with our nursery
and we hope you continue to support our aim to provide a comprehensive
range of quality clematis and complementary climbers.
An enduring reference
This catalogue lists our established range of clematis and climbing
plants; most of the varieties we offer have been in cultivation
for 50 years and some for at least 100 years. As we add new varieties,
we shall publish updates and these will be made available to you
as separate sheets that you can add to your copy of the catalogue.
We offer all of our customers detailed information and practical
advice on correct plant selection, cultivation, feeding, and pruning
– everyone is welcome to our annual pruning demonstrations.
We also offer a library of clematis photographs, which is available
to view whenever you visit – this is a useful reference when
sourcing new plants and checking what a healthy plant should look
like.
Mail order proves popular
The number of mail-order customers we have is growing. The private
courier service began three years ago and has proven to be reliable
– if you anticipate delivery problems at remote locations,
please let us know because we are able to deliver to your place
of work at no extra cost; see the order form for details.
We do not make any charges or cash any cheques until we dispatch
your order. All plants, including the roots, are inspected and are
then sealed to retain compost and moisture in the pot using newsprint,
wrapped in a plastic bag and secured with brown tape. The plant
is then packaged in a robust cardboard container for despatch.
We despatch orders each Wednesday and these are delivered on Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday morning. The parcels should be opened and the
plants checked for water. They may be planted at any time of year,
but avoid severe frost. Under no circumstances should you keep the
plants in heated rooms unless you intend to grow them indoors permanently.
We do everything we can to grow the very best clematis at our nursery,
with cost as a secondary consideration. We apply a strict hygiene
routine so that the plants you buy leave the nursery free of disease,
giving you quicker establishment in your garden.
About our
plants
We take cuttings from healthy stock prepared the previous year. These
young plants are grown-on for up to three years to establish good
crowns and a substantial root system. We use a 3-litre standard pot
and the plants are run up 1.2m canes (some plants are supplied in
2-litre pots). We offer mature plants grown on 1.5 and 1.8m frames
in 10 and 15-litre pots to visiting customers.
All compost is mixed at the nursery and contains Osmacote slow-release
fertiliser, two fungicides that enable us to grow wilt free plants
and Suscon Green, a slow-release insecticide that kills vine weevil.
These chemicals remain in the rootball for up to nine months enabling
the clematis to establish itself. This gives you the shortest route
to success, providing conditions are created for the plant to succeed.
Clematis are hardy but, as with most plants, they prefer to grow
out of the wind and scorching sun. If you have an exposed site that
is either windy or extremely hot, please contact us and we will
help you to select from our clematis list or the hardier alternative
climbing plants for these sites.
The range of climbing plants we grow has increased to include climbing
hydrangea, annual and perennial sweet peas, wisterias, evergreen
hardy abutilons, the chocolate vine (Akebia quinata) and additional
decorative and fruiting grape vines.
All prices in this catalogue are for plants in 2 and 3-litre pots.
Visitors to the nursery have access to older or larger specimens
that may have different prices. We are sorry but we cannot offer
extensive guarantees and we require notification of any complaints
within ten days. We do, however, provide assistance to help our
customers in every way possible so that they succeed with their
plants.
Award winner
The New Zealand evergreen clematis with their thick parsley leaves
continue to arouse interest with stunning displays, and C.montana
Jacqui with its double white scented flowers received an award at
The British Clematis Society trials. This variety was raised by
a friend, Mrs Jacqui Williams, in her garden at Haultwick, Hertfordshire.
Successful feeding
Gardeners throughout the UK acclaim Priorswood Clematis Food to
be an elixir for improving any clematis and many other garden plants.
Customers often buy our food when they purchase plants, but we recommend
that it be used the year after the clematis is planted because sufficient
Osmacote fertiliser is included in the growing medium to enable
your plant to get off to a good start.
Composted manure is sold at the nursery, which is odour free and
is being used to good effect both at planting and as annual mulch.
Choosing varieties
You may have never had the opportunity to see a particular clematis
growing and flowering first. Colour reproduction in clematis books
can be misleading, so we suggest you choose which colours you prefer
and when you want the plants to flower. To help you, we have arranged
this catalogue to take you through the clematis year in order of
flowering. Winter-flowering clematis are mainly white or cream,
but from early spring through to autumn, there is a wide range of
colours. If you would prefer to discuss your needs, please telephone
us on 01920 461543 and we will do our best to help you.
We recommend ordering early if you are planning or building a garden.
You may order early in the year for autumn or spring delivery. Due
to the large number of cultivars we grow, some are produced in small
quantities and are soon sold out – Rachel de Thame has only
to whisper a variety name on Friday night and it all starts to happen.
It does not matter if you change your mind or wish to add to the
order at a later date just telephone Clare on 01920 461543.
Just ask, we want to help
Our range of plants is extensive, but if you cannot find a variety
that you simply must have, please let us know what you are looking
for because we may be able to obtain a specimen or grow it for you.

Cultivation notebook
Clematis are suited to almost any aspect and climate. To help you
get the most out of your plants we have compiled a cultivation notebook
(published 2003) which addresses the many questions that we are
asked by nursery visitors and at shows.
This indespensible notebook contains comprehensive information
on clematis selection, choosing a site, soil preparation and planting,
routine care, pruning and training.
